Flipped classroom and the top 10 tech suggestions for the classroom

This week’s topic is the flipped class room.  In my mind it ties closely with last week’s technology focus.  However the flipped class room seems to take the classroom further.  So the acronym stands for F – Flexible Environment, The L is for Learning Culture, The I is for Intentional Content, and the P is for Professional Educators.  The idea of a flipped classroom is that lessons are viewed at home and students bring their previous knowledge and experience with the lesson into the classroom where they work on the content that was taught in the lesson.  His allows students the ability to ask teachers to clarify or re-explain anything.  Also since the instruction of a lecture or lesson are happening prior to the class room in the classroom a teacher has more time to go through problems that would have been assigned as homework  prior to the flipped classroom model.  Another asset to this model of classroom instruction there would be more one on one teaching time, more student driven conversations.  This model would also allow teacher more time to assess a student’s comprehension of the material.
Now every lesson and or subject is not going to fit easily into the flipped model.  I think that over all flipped classrooms will be a great asset to future classrooms again allow for my in class discussions and practice WHILE the teacher is available to help.  As stated in the YouTube video by Salman Khan the creator of Khan University having the lecture portion of class in a recorded fashion allows students freedoms not easily accessed or desirable in class.  The student can pause, repeat at any point allowing them to go over any portion of the lesson they do not understand without fear of peer ridicule.  It allows them to view at their convenience in an atmosphere that is comfortable and of their own choosing.  I dare say that parents may even opt to view these lessons as a form of helping their child. I know that when common core math was being implemented in my area EVER parent I knew contacted me in some form to help them, help their child because the concepts seemed so foreign to the methods they once learned.  In addition to all these benefits imagine is a student is absent.  These digital lessons can help them stay on top of their studies even if they are out for a prolonged illness.

I also found the article 10 Emerging Educational Technologies & How They Are Being Used Across the Globe. Particularly helpful.  I appreciated that they layed out specific programs with ideas on how it can be implemented in the classroom.  With specific suggestions and examples of schools using this technology it makes it easier for me, a tech novice, to see how a program can be modified to be used for my classes.

The flipped Classroom & Intellectual Property

This brings a valid question to the intellectual property of a teacher's work and online entertainment options.  Can a person use someone else's work? How much of another persons work can be used?  What is the right way to give that person credit for their contribution to your work?   In one of the posts we read for class tonight they give VERY specific criteria for how many seconds of music can be played or how many images from the same artist can be included in a work.  I found this incredible useful and saved a copy of the listed information for me to reference back to from time to time.

Digital Story

This week’s readings where very informative!  I will never think of a bit, bite, MP3, music format, or a  digital image format the same after reading them.   I commonly use MP3 and JPEG formats for my digital needs but from here on I will look for opportunities to have a discerning eye and ear when it comes to my digital music and images.  Now as far as the article that mentions the video uploads and their differences.  The key point I took away was to make sure what is coming out of your machine is compatibility with your editing software and size matters keep it small.

ALL this is to get to the part that I LOVE and think would be most useful in the class room . . . . . DIGITAL STORY TELLING!!!!   I can see this used in the class room in SO many ways.  Can you imagine math lessons being taught from a digital platform ? For students that are absent they could just upload today’s video and still be on track.  The teachers could use class time to field concerns and hang up students are facing AFTER viewing the lesson.  I have seen something similar used in classrooms as low as PRE-K.  I’ve seen the teacher using a recorded version of themselves introducing letter sounds and reading books.  I’ve also seen “guest readers” a child’s parent recording themselves reading a family favorite that the teacher projects during reading time.  I’ve also seen Science and Social Studies teachers use similar formats to supplement or introduce a concept.  All of this as a SPED major appeals to hitting multiple learning styles and is a great attempt to reach learners in a new cutting edge format in this digital age.

Assistive Technology

In this blog I will be discussing several articles and you tube videos that I have been assigned to give my thoughts on for AEDU class 209.

I've had the blessing of working with students who use assistive technology in their everyday lives,  in the class room and attempting to assess.  Programs like proloquo2go and DynaVox

In the assigned video the app Proloquo2go was discussed.  The ability for this app to enrich a students life CAN NOT be overstated.  This app is very user friendly.  While I was assisting a student who transferred to the school I worked at I was able to take pictures of new staff and add them to her school folder.  While attempting to get to know her she was able to tell me about her old school, routine, family etc. using this app just like any other child her age.  She used her device to tell us if she was hurt, hungry, thirsty, in need of toileting.

After seeing first hand how life changing this app could be it will always be my recommendation to have this technology in the classroom and some time devoted to introducing it to non/low verbal students.  The success that are discussed in the videos for Sara and Lianna could be experienced by others.  Imagine a young lady able to attend college or a "boy crazy" little girl each only wanting to be able to have similar experiences as their peers.  No baby talk and know me for my music and future book are the requests.  They want to be known for more than their disability.

These apps and programs like them may take time to teach and learn.  They may also seem to have a high cost. However compared with the previous options they are more attainable and more user friendly.  I think they should be required in EVERY SPED classroom with non/low verbal students because the impact they make in a chills life are immeasurable!!!!
